   Services

The Society of St. Vincent de Paul offers tangible assistance to those in need. This aid may take the form of direct dollar or in-kind service, intervention, advocacy and consultation. Thousands of people in the Pittsburgh area have been assisted by way of home visits, visits in institutions (including persons incarcerated) and the following specialized projects:

  • Food Pantries - The Council of Pittsburgh sponsors two major food pantries serving hundreds of clients each month. They are located on the North Side of Pittsburgh and in Butler. In addition, several Conferences operate smaller food pantries in their respective parishes.

  • Indigent Burial Program - Unfortunately, some individuals die alone and seemingly forgotten with no one to provide for their burial. They may be homeless people or patients living out their last days in nursing homes. Through its Indigent Burial Program, with the support of the Catholic Cemeteries Association and local funeral directors, the Society provides a dignified burial for these persons.

  • Clothing Vouchers - The Society of St. Vincent de Paul works diligently to provide the basic necessity of clothing for residents of Western Pennsylvania. Partnering with more than 50 other non-profit organizations including county social services, employment services and churches, St. Vincent de Paul offers clothing vouchers through its five conveniently located thrift stores. Clothing voucher requests are submitted by Conference members, social workers, and in-kind partners to the central office of the Council of Pittsburgh to be sent to the store nearest the client. Clients are then able to shop for their individual style and size of clothing free of charge.

  • Utility Assistance Program - Depending upon the availability of funds, utility assistance (gas, electric, water) is provided by the Society of St. Vincent de Paul Conferences throughout the year for individuals who are experiencing a crisis and cannot afford their regular monthly payments. Some conferences also offer assistance to apply for LIHEAP, CRISIS and the $1 Energy Programs. For more information contact our Assistance Coordinator at 412-321-1071 x502.
