Process

The Society of St. Vincent de Paul Council of Pittsburgh provides assistance through a network of local Conferences—volunteer groups of Vincentians dedicated to helping neighbors in need.

Our Process Overview

1. Reaching Out for Help
  • Neighbors in need can contact their local St. Vincent de Paul Conference. Each conference typically serves a specific geographic area, often aligned with parish boundaries.
  • To find the appropriate conference, individuals can call the Society’s main office at 412-321-1071 or utilize the Address Finder for guidance on locating nearby assistance.
2. Initial Contact
  • After reaching out and leaving a message including your zip code, a representative from the local conference will typically respond promptly. They will gather details about the situation and the type of assistance needed (e.g., help with rent, utilities, food, clothing, or other emergency needs).
3. Home Visit or Personal Meeting
  • A hallmark of St. Vincent de Paul’s approach is the home visit. Conference members (called Vincentians) meet with the individual or family in the comfort of their home to better understand their challenges and offer personalized support.
  • During the visit, the Vincentians will:
    • Listen compassionately to the person’s story.
    • Assess the immediate and long-term needs.
    • Verify eligibility for assistance.
4. Decision on Assistance
  • After the home visit, the Conference will review the request. Decisions are made collaboratively and compassionately, ensuring that the assistance aligns with available resources and the guidelines of the Society.
  • Assistance may include direct financial support (e.g., paying a utility bill), vouchers for goods (e.g., furniture, clothing), referrals to other resources, and spiritual support.
5. Providing Support
  • Approved assistance is provided as quickly as possible. For financial needs, payments are made directly to the landlord, utility company, or service provider.
  • In cases where additional resources are needed, Conferences may collaborate with other Conferences, community organizations or agencies to ensure comprehensive support.
6. Follow-Up and Ongoing Support
  • Conferences often stay in touch with those they assist to provide encouragement and additional resources as needed.
  • The goal is not just to address immediate needs but to foster dignity, hope, and self-sufficiency.
Additional Notes:
  • Confidentiality: All interactions are handled with the utmost respect and confidentiality.
  • Faith-Based Care: Assistance is given without discrimination, regardless of religion, race, or background.
  • Limitations: The ability to provide assistance depends on the resources available within the local conference. If a particular conference is unable to meet a need, they may direct individuals to other community resources.
